Loaf Stories

Identity & belonging through
bread culture

Project

The project “Loaf Stories. Identity & belonging through bread culture” is an inclusive cultural education project focusing on intangible cultural heritage and knowledge exchange between Greece (Limnos) and Norway (Oslo). Drawing inspiration from the culture of bread and its importance to the community, and drawing on the partners’ expertise in education, culture and sustainability, it emphasizes ancient and traditional seeds, local bread making and consumption habits, as well as equipment and techniques, both modern and traditional, that promote sustainable practices.

Partners

The ‘Loaf Stories’ project is designed and coordinated by AMKE Places & Traces, with partners Fragment (Community Activation Partner) and Sanke (Scientific Documentation Partner) from Norway. The project benefits from a funding from the EEA Grants (funding period 2014-2021), which represent the contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway towards a green, competitive and inclusive Europe.

Activities

A series of activities were implemented in Lemnos during the first week of April 2025 in the framework of the project, including: a two-day workshop for the general public on bread as a living tradition and a meeting point of cultures; a two-day experiential workshop for teenagers, sustainability and climate change; a structured discussion with the local community to highlight bread making methods and beliefs from Lemnos; and a know-how transfer meeting with the Municipality of Lemnos on best practices for the integration of bread culture in the educational process.

Educational material

The project includes the creation of educational material, in Greek and English, as well as an adapted version, accessible for people with developmental disabilities and people on the autism spectrum.
